Celiac disease: M ore commonly known as gluten intolerance, it is an autoimmune disease that people cannot consume gluten, otherwise their intestines will be damaged. People with frequent exposure to stomach acids such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD can be at risk of wearing down their enamel layer. Acidic reflux: As mentioned above, an oral cavity with an acidic environment can eventually lead to enamel erosion and translucent teeth. That’s can lead to the semi-transparent teeth. If you always have acidic food or drink, like citric fruits and soft drinks, your teeth is easier to be worn off. Acidic food and drinks: Compared to acidic environment, the alkaline one is better for healthy teeth. The enamel is defective while growing, thus becoming thin and weak. Enamel hypoplasia: This condition is normally genetic. And if the enamel erosion continues, your teeth will suffer from pain and sensitivity while having hot or cold drink. If the enamel starts to wear away, you will notice the edge of your teeth is becoming bluish, pale and sometimes see-through. ![]() ![]() ![]() Doorways were enlarged, and the library's cafe and gift shop were relocated to the 1991 building. The renovation replaced the 1991 building's stone walls and heavily tinted windows with large glass curtain walls, giving views of the nearby Topiary Park, Cristo Rey Columbus High School, and Grant Medical Center. The 1991 addition was constructed before the internet was popular, and before smartphones existed thus the 1991 building was more-so built to house books. The 2015 renovation did not increase square footage, though it redesigned the library's space to reduce staff and shelf space and increase multimedia space it reduced the Main Library's capacity from approximately 1 million volumes down to 300,000. The renovations were scheduled to be complete by summer 2016, in time for the library to host the World Congress of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. 80 percent of the branch's collection was moved to storage, while the rest was relocated to other branches. The 1991 addition was the focus of the renovation, replacing the windowless east facade with two stories of windows overlooking Topiary Park. The branch closed for the project two months later, on April 13, 2015. The latest renovation had its groundbreaking on February 24, 2015. This project, inspired by the main branch of the New York Public Library and its adjoining Bryant Park, in turn inspired the CML's 2015–16 renovation of its Main Library. It paid $2.16 million for the building and its 2.24 acres in February 2013, and resold everything except the parking lot space for $1 million to the private Cristo Rey Columbus High School in March 2013. The CML purchased the property in order to obtain rights to the parking lot and replace it with a patio and park space. The only obstacle between the two was a small parking lot, which was part of the long-vacant Ohio School for the Deaf property. In 2013, the CML was looking to connect the library building to the nearby Topiary Park. In 2007, the centennial of the Main Library, the State Library of Ohio donated a 25,000-volume collection of genealogical history to the library, now located on the third floor. The renovation was finished on January 2, 1991, and dedicated on April 30, 1991, by First Lady Barbara Bush and Ohio governor George Voinovich. The renovation included an addition that tripled the library's space, from 87,000 square feet to 418,800 square feet. The 1990–1991 renovation cost $39 million, funded by a tax levy in the late 1980s. The Carnegie building was renovated in 1989, and the 19 additions were demolished. In 1953, the first expansion of the library opened, followed by a 15,000-square-foot annex in 1961. Since it initially opened, the library has undergone several major renovations and expansions to accommodate the city's increasing population. In 1921, when the City Hall building burned, the library housed the mayor and city officials until the construction of the new city hall. Construction lasted from 1903 to 1906 at a cost of $310,000 the city covered the remaining cost and agreed to pay at least $20,000 per year in maintenance and growth, a stipulation of Carnegie's gift. The house was demolished to make way for the library. Grant Avenue was the location of the Judge Noah Swayne house (also known as the Thomas Ewing Miller house), the official residence of six Ohio governors, including future president Rutherford B. The third floor includes a computer lab and houses the Franklin County Genealogical & Historical Society. It includes numerous rooms, including separate spaces for children, teens, an adult reading room, newspaper room, auditorium, gallery, gift shop, and a cafe. Respiration causes body heat to be lost as warm air in the lungs is exhaled into the atmosphere and cooler air is inhaled thus cooling the body. In cold weather, this is one of the leading causes of heat loss from the human body. Heat can also be gained by radiation, for example, when a person stands by a fire or in bright sunlight. The body can lose heat by radiation, such as when a person stands in a cold room. Radiant energy is a type of invisible light that transfers heat. Radiation is the transfer of heat by radiant energy, such as infrared heat waves from our human body. Use appropriate sweat-wicking clothing as discussed later in this article. If a SWAT officer becomes wet from sweating and then stands quietly, especially with non-wicking clothing like cotton T-shirts and underwear, it is possible for hypothermia to occur even when the temperature is 50☏ (10☌). The temperature does not have to be below freezing for hypothermia to occur. The problem occurs when they then are forced to stand or lay quietly in a fixed position for an hour or two and thus cool down. Tactical officers with heavy gear and ballistic protection will easily sweat inside or while running or climbing into position. Evaporation is the natural mechanism by which sweating (perspiration) cools the body. A person standing outside in windy winter weather and wearing lightweight clothing is losing heat to the environment.Įvaporation is the conversion of any liquid to a gas, a process that requires energy, or heat. Heat passes directly from the body to the colder object.Ĭonvection occurs when body heat is transferred to circulating cooler air, such as when outside standing between several buildings on a windy day. Heat transfer can occur in five ways: Conduction, Convection, Evaporation, Radiation, and Respiration.Ĭonduction is the direct transfer of heat from a part of the body to a colder object by direct contact, such as when a warm hand touches cold metal of our weapons or icy pavement. The body can also gain heat from the environment. Because heat always travels from a warmer place to a cooler place, the body tends to lose heat to the cooler environment when in certain climates. Officers become combat ineffective and are a liability to the team. The definition of hypothermia is an inner core temperature of 95 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. When the core body temperature falls, hypo (low) thermia (temperature) occurs. ![]() ![]() Cold exposure may cause injury to individual parts of the body, such as the feet, hands, ears, or nose, or to the body as a whole. If the body is exposed to cold environments and fails to maintain a normal temperature of approximately 98.6 degrees F, these mechanisms will start shutting down and fail. Normal body temperature must be maintained within a very narrow range for the body’s chemistry to work efficiently.
